Binzhou Medical University

Binzhou Medical University

Binzhou Medical University (BMU) is a renowned institution in Shandong Province, specializing in the cultivation of applied talents. Established in 1946 as the Medical College of the former National Shandong University, it became an independent institution named Qingdao Medical College in 1956. The university was relocated to Huimin in 1970, and in 1981, it was renamed Beizhen Medical College. Today, BMU is a comprehensive provincial medical university excelling in medical disciplines, rehabilitation medicine, special education, and multidisciplinary areas such as science, engineering, management, and education.

In 1985, BMU pioneered higher medical education for people with disabilities in China by launching the nation’s first undergraduate program dedicated to disabled students. Over the years, the university has expanded its inclusivity by enrolling visually impaired students in 2012 and hearing-impaired students in 2018, filling a critical gap in medical education for these groups. This innovative approach, known as the “Binzhou Medical College Model,” integrates education, health, and practical application, producing 1,134 medical professionals with disabilities and contributing significantly to the advancement of disability education in China.

BMU operates two campuses in Yantai and Binzhou, spanning 1,616.8 acres, with a combined construction area of 637,000 square meters. Its total assets amount to 1.25 billion yuan, with 233 million yuan allocated to teaching and research equipment. The university’s library houses 2.4 million volumes. BMU is supported by 2 top-tier affiliated general hospitals, 19 non-direct affiliated hospitals, 14 teaching hospitals, and over 140 practical teaching bases, offering more than 28,000 teaching-practice beds. The Binzhou Affiliated Hospital and Yantai Affiliated Hospital serve as regional medical hubs, with a combined capacity of over 5,000 beds and state-of-the-art facilities.

The university boasts a robust academic team of 6,686 faculty and medical staff, including 1,098 full-time teachers, 203 professors, 492 associate professors, and 352 doctoral degree holders. Its faculty includes distinguished professionals contributing to the institution’s academic and research excellence.

BMU has established extensive international collaborations with 40 universities and medical institutions, including the University of Alabama (USA), the University of Western Scotland (UK), and the University of Strasbourg (France). These partnerships foster personnel exchanges, joint graduate training, collaborative research, and innovative projects, enhancing the university’s global reputation and academic influence.

About City:

Yantai, situated in the northeast of Shandong Province, enjoys a prime coastal location bordered by the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Sea, directly facing South Korea and Japan. With its endless beaches, crystal-clear waters, enchanting islands, and the legendary Penglai Pavilion—famed for the tale of the “Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea”—Yantai has earned its reputation as a renowned tourist destination both domestically and internationally. Additionally, the natural phenomenon of mirages adds to its allure.

The region is celebrated for its abundant seafood and fruit harvests, including apples, pears, and cherries. Yantai is also known as the “International Grape and Wine City” due to its historic wine industry, spearheaded by the Zhangyu Company, China’s first industrial wine producer, which has significantly contributed to the nation’s wine industry.

In 2004, Yantai was recognized by China Central Television (CCTV) as the “Most Charming City of China.” Though smaller in scale than cities like Beijing or Shanghai, Yantai boasts unique charm and exceptional livability. The United Nations has even listed it as one of the most habitable places in the world. Rolling hills, rivers, pristine beaches, and neighboring islands form the city’s picturesque landscape.

Yantai’s long coastline and over 60 islands provide an endless bounty for seafood lovers, offering delicacies like sea cucumbers, abalones, scallops, crabs, and prawns. The fertile land is also rich in minerals, including China’s highest gold reserves. The city’s local cuisine highlights the abundance of fresh seafood, fruits, and vegetables, with chefs crafting creative and flavorful dishes that are renowned across the country.

Climate:

In Yantai, the summers are long, warm, humid, and wet; the winters are very cold, snowy, and windy; and it is partly cloudy year round. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 24°F to 86°F and is rarely below 16°F or above 93°F.
